Quarterly(ish) Blog Management Update: What I’ve Learned So Far

Posted on 3 April 202511 April 2025 By Sage Elliott

Why, hello, April 2025. I’ve been juggling multiple blogs for about three months now. It seemed like a good moment to reflect on the first quarter of 2025. What has blog management been like for me> I’ve learned some things, some things have reinforced what I previously believed, and there are some things I’d like to work on.

The following is a list of what I would describe as truths and lessons that I’ve learned.

Table of Contents

Toggle
  • Blog posts aren’t done just because you hit publish.
  • If I don’t have a routine, things don’t get done.
  • On that note, I need to work on forgiving myself when life doesn’t go as planned.
  • Sometimes, blog management means you need to turn to plan b or c.
  • My social media strategy needs work.

Blog posts aren’t done just because you hit publish.

I think that there’s this perception that just because a post is live, the author never makes any changes. Once it’s out in the either, there’s nothing more to be done. And that simply isn’t true.

OK, yes, this is going to be dependent on a lot of factors, but just because a post has gone live doesn’t mean there aren’t reasons why it might make sense to update a post.

The good news here is that if you’re someone who has a tendency to get hung up on perfection, updating a post makes it possible to fix a mistake, add or change information when relevant, etc. This fact might take some of the stress off for some.

Of course, the downside is that your catalog of live blog posts is always getting larger, which means that there will be more posts for you to potentially update as time goes on. This, in turn, means more work. Some folks might find this stressful.

What kinds of changes have I personally been making? So far, I’ve been doing things like:

āœ… Adding or changing links.

āœ… Rewriting parts of posts because I realized that what I originally wrote didn’t convey the message I wanted to convey in the way I wanted to convey it.Ā

āœ… There have been a couple of instances where I’ve added supplemental content like photos or videos.Ā

You get the idea.

If I don’t have a routine, things don’t get done.

This is a fact that I’ve known about for ages, but the last few months have only reinforced that for me.

You may have noticed that I’ve missed posts and social media content because life deviated from the routine I tried to set for myself.

Maybe you didn’t notice and I’m just being hard on myself (I did indicate that I have a hard time maintaining momentum if I struggle to reach my goals).

For me, successful blog management means setting a realistic routine for myself. The keyword here is ā€œrealistic.ā€ I’m still working on that part.

On that note, I need to work on forgiving myself when life doesn’t go as planned.

One of the things I need to work on is learning how to pivot my blog management plans when circumstances change. I think one of the reasons this is hard for me is because it seems in direct contrast with my previous point about routine.

It’s really easy for me to feel like I’m a failure if I don’t complete my to-do list. I can get to the point where it can keep me up at night. Maybe you can relate.

What I need to work on is giving myself some grace. I’m chronically tired and I have other responsibilities outside of blogging. Sometimes, it’s impossible for me to do all the things I want to do.

I’m not curing cancer with my blogs. Nobody dies if I don’t get a blog post up.

Sometimes, blog management means you need to turn to plan b or c.

As I indicated above, I need to learn how to pivot my blog management strategy. Sometimes, it’s necessary for whatever reason. Other times, it’s just what makes the most sense at the time.

For example, my original plan with Grrrl Fans was to review episodes of Xena: Warrior Princess. However, the show is a spin-off of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. I’m sure I could watch Xena without having seen Hercules, but doing so would have bugged me. As it turns out, there’s another spin-off of Avatar: The Last Airbender (ATLA) in the works, and I wanted to rewatch the franchise anyway. By starting with ATLA, I can watch Hercules in the background and when I’m done with ATLA, I’ll should be at a good spot to start watching Xena. Does that make sense?

My social media strategy needs work.

I confess that while I love writing blog posts, I don’t always love engaging on social media. In my experience, it can be super exhausting.

Well, kinda.

I set up different social media accounts for each of my blogs because in my brain it seemed to make the most sense at the time.

What I’m learning is that while I don’t really mind maintaining one account per platform, maintaining multiple accounts across multiple platforms can often feel overwhelming.

When I’m tired or busy and need to cut something out of my routine, batch scheduling social media posts is almost always the first thing to go. I’m including Pinterest here. I realize not everyone considers Pinterest a social media platform, but for the sake of simplicity, I’m including it here. In any case, I set up Pinterest accounts because I kept reading that it’s so great at helping people find your blog – and I’m not always consistent with it. Which probably isn’t helping.

I’d really like to have a more effective social media strategy. Maybe focus on fewer platforms or combine things. Or something.

I guess I still haven’t completely figured social media out.

I think that’s everything for now. If you create content online, what are some things you’ve learned the hard way?
